At Tik Tak Childcare, we believe that play is not just fun — it’s fundamental. For young children, play is how they make sense of the world, explore ideas, build relationships and develop vital skills. That’s why learning through play is at the core of everything we do.

In fact, the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) states clearly that play is the most effective way for children to learn in the early years. And we couldn’t agree more.

What does learning through play mean?

Learning through play means creating an environment where children are free to:

• Explore and investigate

• Imagine and create

• Move and build

• Solve problems

• Express emotions

• Connect with others

Rather than sitting still and being “taught” in the traditional sense, children learn best by doing, discovering and experimenting — with caring adults nearby to support and guide them.

The benefits of play-based learning

When children play, they’re developing in all areas at once:

• Cognitive – Counting, sorting, predicting, reasoning

• Language – Talking, listening, asking questions, telling stories

• Physical – Climbing, balancing, drawing, fine motor control

Play also helps children process their experiences, express their feelings and explore their identity — which is especially important for bilingual children or those new to the nursery environment.

Structure still has a place — but it’s woven into play. For example, a child counting blocks is learning maths. A group role-playing a doctor’s office is building communication and empathy. Play doesn’t mean chaos — it means freedom within a thoughtful framework.

How parents can support play at home

You don’t need special toys or a lot of time. Simply:

• Follow your child’s lead

• Offer choices and time to explore

• Join in their play — but don’t take over

• Ask open-ended questions like “What do you think will happen next?”
