R is for Routines
In early childhood, routines do more than fill time — they create security, structure and a sense of belonging. At Tik Tak Childcare in Milton Keynes, we believe that consistent, predictable routines help children feel safe, confident and ready to learn.
Why routines matter in the early years
Young children thrive on knowing what comes next. Routines help them:
Understand the world around them
Feel in control and reduce anxiety
Develop independence
Build trust in adults and the environment
Transition more easily between activities
Whether it’s washing hands before lunch or singing the same goodbye song each day, these small moments provide comfort and rhythm.
Our daily routine at Tik Tak Childcare
While each age group has a tailored schedule, our general flow includes:
Arrival and welcome – A calm start with familiar faces and free play
Morning circle – Singing, stories or group discussion
Play-based learning – Indoors and outdoors, guided by children’s interests
Mealtimes – Shared meals that encourage conversation and self-help skills
Rest or quiet time – Especially important for babies and toddlers
Afternoon exploration – Continued play, sensory activities, or group games
Home time – A warm goodbye and update for parents
These routines are consistent but flexible — we adapt to each child’s pace, energy levels and emotional needs.
Routines and emotional wellbeing
For children who are settling in, learning a new language, or transitioning between settings, routines offer something to hold onto. They reduce stress and help children build trust — in adults, in the environment, and in themselves.
Our key person approach ensures each child is guided through the routine with sensitivity and care.
Supporting routines at home
We believe in partnership with parents, and routines are a big part of that. You can support your child by:
Creating simple routines at home (morning prep, bedtime rituals)
Talking about the nursery day before and after it happens
Using consistent phrases or songs to mark transitions (e.g. “Time to tidy up!”)
Keeping us informed about changes in your child’s routine or sleep
When home and nursery routines align, children feel more secure and regulated.
Routines for independence
Montessori-inspired environments, like ours, also use routines to build independence. Children learn to:
Find their coat
Choose and tidy up activities
Pour their own water
Wash hands before meals
It’s all part of helping them feel capable, confident and ready for what’s next.
