Outdoor Learning

At Tik Tak Childcare, we believe the best classrooms sometimes have no walls. Outdoor learning is an essential part of our approach, helping children develop confidence, curiosity, and a deeper connection with the natural world.

At Tik Tak Childcare, our garden is more than just an outdoor play area—it’s an extension of our learning environment. Thoughtfully designed for exploration, creativity, and connection with nature, our private garden gives children the space to move freely, breathe deeply, and grow confidently.

Children engage in a variety of outdoor activities every day, from physical play and group games to nature-based learning and quiet time under the trees. Rain or shine, our garden is a place for building resilience, independence, and imagination.

We’ve created purposeful zones to support development through play, including:

  • Sensory areas with sand, water, and natural materials

  • A mud kitchen for messy, imaginative cooking fun

  • Planting beds and garden tools for growing herbs and vegetables

  • Climbing structures and open space to support physical development

  • Bikes and ride-on cars to develop balance, coordination, and confidence

  • Quiet corners for reading, reflection, or simply watching the clouds drift by

  • A picnic area where children can enjoy snacks outdoors or help cook simple meals during the summer months

Every Friday, we also venture out to the local North Willen Lake area for a morning of Forest School-style activities—a highlight of the week for many of our children.

You can find out more about these exciting experiences in the Outdoor Learning section of our website.

Forest School at North Willen Lake

Every Friday, our older children take part in a much-loved adventure to the beautiful North Willen Lake area. These weekly outings are inspired by Forest School principles, encouraging children to explore, create, and learn through meaningful experiences in nature.

Activities include:

  • Den building and imaginative play using natural materials

  • Nature walks that develop observation skills and environmental awareness

  • Bug hunting and wildlife spotting

  • Storytelling and songs around the “campfire”

  • Hands-on experiences with sticks, mud, leaves, and stones to build fine motor skills and sensory confidence

  • Opportunities for teamwork, problem-solving, and risk assessment in a safe, supervised setting

These sessions offer children the freedom to move, make choices, and engage all their senses. They build resilience, independence, and a love for the outdoors—key life skills that complement everything we teach inside the classroom.

Rain or shine, our Friday forest adventures are a highlight of the week and a powerful way for children to grow in confidence, curiosity, and connection with the world around them.
