In today’s multicultural world — and especially in a vibrant town like Milton Keynes — bilingualism is more than just an advantage. For many children, it’s a natural part of daily life. At Tik Tak Childcare, we celebrate and support bilingualism as a vital strength, not something to be “overcome” or “corrected.”

So what exactly is bilingualism in early childhood, and how do we nurture it?

What is bilingualism?

Bilingualism simply means being able to understand and/or use two languages. Some children grow up hearing one language at home and another in nursery or the wider community. Others might be learning more than two — and that’s okay too! At Tik Tak, many of our children speak Polish, Romanian, Urdu, Portuguese, or other home languages alongside English.

It’s important to know that every bilingual journey is unique. Some children start speaking both languages early on. Others may take more time, mixing them or choosing one over the other. This is all part of natural language development.

The Tik Tak approach to bilingualism

• Respect first languages – We honour and encourage children’s home languages. We ask families to share key words and phrases with us, and we often incorporate them into daily routines and play.

• Visual support and gestures – We use pictures, actions and real objects to help children make connections between words and meaning.

• Patience and praise – We celebrate progress, not perfection. All efforts to communicate are valued — in any language.

• Multilingual staff – Where possible, our team reflects the diversity of our families. This helps children feel understood, especially during transitions or settling in.

The advantages of bilingualism go far beyond just speaking two languages. Bilingual children often show:
