If you’ve ever looked into nurseries or preschools in England, you’ve likely come across the term EYFS. But what does it mean — and why does it matter for your child’s early education?

EYFS stands for the Early Years Foundation Stage, the official framework that guides how nurseries, preschools, and childminders support children from birth to age five. At Tik Tak Childcare in Milton Keynes, the EYFS is at the heart of everything we do — but we bring it to life in a way that feels natural, nurturing and joyful.

What is the EYFS?

The EYFS is a statutory framework developed by the UK government. It sets the standards for:

• Learning and development

• Personal and emotional wellbeing

• Health and safety

• Staff qualifications and ratios

• Assessment and reporting

All registered childcare providers in England — including Tik Tak Childcare — are legally required to follow the EYFS. But we believe it’s more than a checklist; it’s a way of seeing and supporting every child as a whole person.

The 7 areas of learning

The EYFS breaks early development into seven interconnected areas:

Prime areas (focus from birth):

1. Communication and language

2. Physical development

3. Personal, social and emotional development

Specific areas (grow from age 3+):

4. Literacy

5. Mathematics

6. Understanding the world

7. Expressive arts and design
