O is for Outdoor Play

Fresh air, open space, and the freedom to move — outdoor play is a vital part of every child’s development. At Tik Tak Childcare in Milton Keynes, we believe the outdoors is not just a “break” from learning — it’s a classroom in its own right.

That’s why outdoor play is built into our daily routine, rain or shine.

Why outdoor play matters

Playing outside supports children’s:

• Physical development – Running, climbing, balancing, digging

• Social skills – Taking turns, negotiating space, group play

• Emotional wellbeing – Stress relief, mood regulation, freedom

• Curiosity and problem-solving – Investigating nature, building, imagining

• Language and communication – New words, questions, shared experiences

Children who spend time outside tend to sleep better, concentrate longer, and feel more confident in their bodies. It’s about whole-child development — not just “letting off steam.”

Outdoor learning at Tik Tak Childcare

As a nursery in Milton Keynes, we’re lucky to have access to safe, stimulating outdoor spaces — and we use them every day. Our outdoor environment includes:

• Natural materials – Logs, mud, water, stones and plants

• Active equipment – Climbing frames, bikes, tunnels

• Sensory zones – Sand pits, water trays, music walls

• Gardening areas – Where children grow and care for plants

• Loose parts play – Open-ended objects for building and inventing

Outdoor play is child-led, exploratory and always supervised by staff who support risk-taking safely and positively.

Learning through outdoor experiences

Outdoor play is not separate from learning — it’s how children learn. For example:

• Pouring water = early maths

• Watching insects = science exploration

• Building a fort = teamwork and engineering

• Telling stories in the playhouse = language development

We link outdoor play to the EYFS framework and adapt our approach to support each child’s stage of development, interests and needs.

Supporting bilingual and diverse learners outside

Outdoor spaces offer freedom from the pressure of formal language. For children learning English or navigating cultural transitions, play outside can be a place to connect non-verbally, express themselves, and build confidence without needing words.

We support bilingual children by using gesture, visuals and parallel talk — and by simply letting them play in their own way.

Encouraging outdoor play at home

You don’t need a big garden or expensive equipment. A walk to the park, a puddle to jump in, or a pile of leaves can offer endless possibilities. Just let your child lead, and be open to a bit of mud!
