U is for Understanding Emotions

From the first smile to the first tantrum, emotions are a huge part of early childhood. At Tik Tak Childcare in Milton Keynes, we don’t just manage emotions — we teach children to understand, express and navigate them with confidence and care.

Helping children recognise and regulate their feelings is a key part of their overall development. It supports wellbeing, builds resilience, and lays the foundation for healthy relationships later in life.

Why emotional development matters

Young children are still learning how to:

  • Name what they’re feeling

  • Understand why they feel that way

  • Express their emotions safely

  • Respond to others with empathy

  • Calm themselves when overwhelmed

These skills — sometimes called emotional literacy — don’t develop overnight. They grow slowly through warm relationships, consistent routines, and gentle guidance from adults.

How we support emotional learning at Tik Tak

In our day nursery, children learn to understand emotions through:

  • Key person relationships – Each child has a trusted adult who helps them feel secure, seen and soothed.

  • Emotion-rich language – We name feelings out loud: “I see you’re upset because the toy is gone.”

  • Books and stories – We read about characters experiencing joy, sadness, frustration and more.

  • Visual tools – Feelings charts, mirrors, puppets — all help children connect emotion with expression.

  • Safe spaces – Cosy corners where children can retreat, reset and self-regulate.

  • Modelling – Our staff show how to handle big feelings calmly and kindly.

This approach supports all children — including bilingual learners, who may need extra help connecting words to emotions in English and their home language.

What about big emotions?

Tantrums, tears and frustration are normal — especially during transitions, new routines or social learning. We don’t punish or shame children for their feelings. Instead, we guide them with empathy, using strategies like:

  • Naming the feeling

  • Offering comfort or space

  • Suggesting choices (“Would you like to sit here or play over there?”)

  • Helping repair when needed (“Let’s say sorry together.”)

Over time, children learn that all feelings are okay — and that they have tools to handle them.

How parents can support emotional growth

You don’t need to be perfect — just present and tuned in. At home, you can:

  • Talk openly about your own emotions

  • Help your child name theirs

  • Stay calm during meltdowns

  • Use consistent routines

  • Work with your child’s key person to share insights and strategies

At Tik Tak, we believe emotional development is just as important as literacy or maths. When children feel understood, they’re free to explore, learn and connect with others more deeply.
